Hank Gathers, starred with teammates Bo Kimble, Doug Overton, Derrick Gathers, and Darrell Gates at Murrell Dobbins Technical High School. The team guided the Mustangs to the Public League title in 1985 before Gathers and Kimble went on to USC. They then transferred to Loyola Marymount where the pair became collegiate stars.
Gathers, a 6-foot-7, 210-pounder who was projected to be an NBA lottery pick, collapsed and died on March 4, 1990, during the first half of the West Coast Conference basketball tournament semifinals game against Portland. This is his story!
